Accidents at School
Unfortunately, accidents at school are a common occurrence.
Sometimes, though, these accidents go beyond a minor bump and tumble and are much more serious in consequence. If this is the case, then such an accident cannot be written off as children being children. Instead, the accident will have been caused by the negligence of others and may well have been avoidable.
At Smith Jones, we have been acting on behalf of clients whose children have been involved in accidents in school, since 1988. Of course, accidents at school are not just limited to children, accidents of this type can also affect staff, contractors and visitors to a school.
We are accredited personal injury solicitors by The Law Society and have successfully represented thousands of people making a claim for school injury compensation.
If you have been affected by an accident at school, call us on 0800 195 95 90 and discuss your claim with one of our expert solicitors. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are ready to take your call.
A school has a duty of care to ensure that everyone including children, staff and visitors are kept safe and that precautions are taken to stop accidents from taking place. If you have been affected by an accident that has been caused by a school’s failure to do this, then you could have a claim for compensation.
Common types of accidents at school
Unfortunately, we very often find ourselves coming across school accidents that are similar in nature. The most common types of school accident that we deal with, include:
- Slips and trips – slips and trips on school property often occur due to the improper cleaning or inadequate maintenance of the playground, corridors and walkways. Accidents of this type are often caused by loose and uneven paving slabs, holes in the ground, loose carpets and wet and slippery surfaces
- Injuries caused by defective equipment – all kinds of equipment can be defective and cause injury. However, it is the school’s responsibility to ensure that this is not the case and that equipment is regularly maintained or replaced if faulty. Defective equipment could include desks, chairs and play equipment
- Accidents on school playing fields – the school playing field is a common place for accidents, however, the school should always ensure that these areas are safe and free from danger. Common accidents on school playing fields can be a result of litter including glass, poorly maintained surfaces, lack of supervision and incorrect footwear/kit being used.
Assisting with your school injury compensation claim
To ensure that you are properly compensated for a slip, trip or fall that you have been affected by, there are a number of ways in which you can assist us.
It is important to take down as much information about the accident as you can. We understand this may be difficult if the accident involved a child, but this should contain as much detail as possible, even things that you may initially think are insignificant.
To assist your case, you should also ensure that the accident was reported to someone of authority and was noted in the school’s accident book. If you have eye witnesses, be sure to include their contact details and their account of what happened.
If you wish to discuss an accident at school or you are unsure whether you can make a claim, call us now on our free helpline number 0800 195 95 90 and we will be able to assist you.
