Asbestos was used extensively in the 1970s in the building and plumbing trades. The dangers of the substance were unknown then and often workmen handled it with no protection. Whilst the use of asbestos was later regulated, it was not banned altogether until 1999.
Our solicitors have many years’ experience of making asbestos claims, most commonly on behalf of tradesmen who came into contact with the material in their workplace. Several illnesses are associated with asbestos, these include:
- Asbestosis – A serious, progressive and long-term disease of the lungs. Caused by inhalation of asbestos particles which scar the lung tissue and make it difficult to breathe.
- Mesothelioma – A specific type of cancer caused by asbestos inhalation located in the lining of the lungs. In the UK more than 9 out of 10 men with mesothelioma and 8 out of 10 women have been in contact with asbestos.
Some asbestos related illnesses commonly don’t develop until decades after the initial exposure. It has been known for it to take up to 60 years to develop Mesothelioma; there are now thousands of former tradesmen in the UK who suffer from an asbestos related illness following exposure.
If you or a member of your family has developed an asbestos related illness following exposure to the substance whilst working, you may be able to make an asbestos claim and receive compensation.
