Symptoms of a whiplash injury

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries arising from accidents on the road. The term “whiplash” refers to a soft tissue injury to the neck, shoulder or spine and is the consequence of rapid acceleration or deceleration.

It can take 6–12 hours for the symptoms of whiplash to become apparent, and the pain and stiffness is often worse on the day after the injury.

The most common symptoms are:

• Headaches
• Pain or stiffness in the neck
• Swelling of the neck
• Tenderness along the back of the neck
• Loss of/reduced movement in the neck.
